LIVING A PEACEFUL LIFE, CHAPTER
ONE
Living in
peace is about living harmoniously with yourself, others and all of nature.
Living in peace is both an outward and inward process. Outwardly, living in
peace is a way of life in which we respect and love each other in spite of our
cultural, religious and political differences. Inwardly, we all need to search
our hearts and mind and also understand the fear that causes the impulse to
violence, for in continuing to ignore the rage within, the storm outside will
never subside. Some basic attitudes or lifestyles are required for a peaceful
co-existence: such as being tolerant, non-violent and holding moderate views.
Living in peace is a journey and a way of life that only you can be responsible
for.
One of the
attitudes that enhance peaceful co-existence is having a moderate
conviction: thinking in absolute and holding
to convictions without considering the viewpoints and perspective of others is
a sure way to live an unpeaceful life.
This type of
extremist thinking usually leads to reactive, hasty behavior that lacks the
benefit of reflection and deliberative thinking. This pattern of absolute
conviction, blocks out other realities in the world and can easily lead you
into conflicts when other people fail to agree with your convictions. The wise
thing to do is to moderate your convictions by always being ready to question
and reflect. Accepting the fact that your beliefs, faith, passion or opinions
are but some among many other belief systems in the world will help you live a more
peaceful life.
