Alfred Nobel
THE NOBLE, NOBEL PEACE PRIZE
The Noble
Nobel Peace Prize was first awarded in 1901, an award created by a Swedish
industrialist and manufacturer, Alfred Nobel. It is awarded annually to those
who have ‘’done the most or best work for fraternity between nations, for the
abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of
peace congresses. This is as stated in Per Alfred Noble’s will.
The prize is
awarded on the 10th of every December, in Oslo city hall in Norway.
The peace
award is awarded by a committee of five people chosen by the Norwegian
Parliament.
Nobel who
died in 1896 also constituted award categories in Chemistry, Physics,
Philosophy or Medicine and Literature.
Nobel who was
a trained chemical engineer, ironically was behind the invention of destructive
weapons including dynamite and ballistite, both which were used
violently during his lifetime.
Some scholars suggest that the
peace award was Nobel’s way to compensate for developing destructive forces.
The statute
of Nobel foundation specifies categories of individuals for the Nobel Peace
Prize. These include:
ü Members of National Assemblies and
Governments.
ü Members of the permanent court of
Arbitration and the International Court of Justice at Hague.
ü Members of Institut de Droit
International
ü University Professors, and directors
of peace research and international affairs institutes
The statutes
of Noble foundation do not allow information about nomination for the award to
be made public for at least 50 years after a prize has been awarded, reason
best known to them. Annually, the chairman of the Norwegian Nobel committee
presents the Nobel peace prize in the presence of the King of Norway on 10th
December (the anniversary of Nobel’s death). The Nobel laureates receive a
diploma, a medal and a document confirming the prize.
It is said
that one of the evidence that you are doing a notable job, is some criticism,
because even our lord Jesus Christ himself was criticized. The Nobel peace prize
has also gotten its share of criticisms and omissions. One of these omissions
is that of a great icon of peace Mahatma Gandhi, who never won the peace prize
.Another notable omission which has drawn criticism, is that of Pope John Paul
II.
The omission
of Mahatma Gandhi has been particularly widely discussed; including in public
statements by various member of the Nobel committee. The committee confirmed
that Gandhi was nominated in 1939,1938,1939,1947, and finally a few days before
his death in January 1948.This omission has been publicly regretted by later
member of the Nobel committee and we believe they have learnt to avoid such
costly error. In 1948,following the
death of Gandhi, the Nobel committee declined to award a prize on the ground
that there was no suitable living candidate that year, what a way to correct an
error. The Nobel laureates received a
cash prize 1.5 millions US dollars in 2013. The first person to receive the peace
award was Henry Durant for his role in founding the international Red Cross.
The first woman to win the Nobel Prize was Marie Curie, for her contribution in
physics in 1903.
The Noble
Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded 94 times to 126 Nobel laureates from 1901 to
2013, and 101 individuals with 25 organizations. The international committee of
Red Cross and the office of the United Nation High commission for refugees have
been awarded the prize three times and two times respectively. Some individuals
who have received this prestigious award in recent time include, Ellen Johnson
Sirleaf, Barack H.Obama,Marlti Ahtisaari ,Mohamed Elbaradei,Jimmy Carter and
Kofi Annan,Martin Luther King Jr,Nelson Mandela,Desmond Tutu., to mention but a
few. Wole Soyinka is the first African to be awarded the Nobel Prize in literature.
Are you a Peace builder? ,the Noble Nobel
Peace prize is available for those who have touched our world in a
special way, keep seeking for peace in our unpeaceful world and who knows ,one
day you will be invited to be a recipient of this prestigious award ,THE NOBLE
