THE NOBLE, NOBEL PEACE PRIZE

Alfred Nobel
THE NOBLE, NOBEL PEACE PRIZE
The Noble Nobel Peace Prize was first awarded in 1901, an award created by a Swedish industrialist and manufacturer, Alfred Nobel. It is awarded annually to those who have ‘’done the most or best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses. This is as stated in Per Alfred Noble’s will.
The prize is awarded on the 10th of every December, in Oslo city hall in Norway.
The peace award is awarded by a committee of five people chosen by the Norwegian Parliament.
Nobel who died in 1896 also constituted award categories in Chemistry, Physics, Philosophy or Medicine and Literature.
Nobel who was a trained chemical engineer, ironically was behind the invention of destructive weapons   including  dynamite and ballistite, both which were used violently  during his  lifetime.    Some scholars suggest that the peace award was Nobel’s way to compensate for developing destructive forces.
The statute of Nobel foundation specifies categories of individuals for the Nobel Peace Prize. These include:
ü  Members of National Assemblies and Governments.
ü  Members of the permanent court of Arbitration and the International Court of Justice at Hague.
ü  Members of Institut de Droit International
ü  University Professors, and directors of peace research and international affairs institutes
The statutes of Noble foundation do not allow information about nomination for the award to be made public for at least 50 years after a prize has been awarded, reason best known to them. Annually, the chairman of the Norwegian Nobel committee presents the Nobel peace prize in the presence of the King of Norway on 10th December (the anniversary of Nobel’s death). The Nobel laureates receive a diploma, a medal and a document confirming the prize.
It is said that one of the evidence that you are doing a notable job, is some criticism, because even our lord Jesus Christ himself was criticized. The Nobel peace prize has also gotten its share of criticisms and omissions. One of these omissions is that of a great icon of peace Mahatma Gandhi, who never won the peace prize .Another notable omission which has drawn criticism, is that of Pope John Paul II.
The omission of Mahatma Gandhi has been particularly widely discussed; including in public statements by various member of the Nobel committee. The committee confirmed that Gandhi was nominated in 1939,1938,1939,1947, and finally a few days before his death in January 1948.This omission has been publicly regretted by later member of the Nobel committee and we believe they have learnt to avoid such costly error. In  1948,following the death of Gandhi, the Nobel committee declined to award a prize on the ground that there was no suitable living candidate that year, what a way to correct an error.  The Nobel laureates received a cash prize 1.5 millions US dollars in 2013. The first person to receive the peace award was Henry Durant for his role in founding the international Red Cross. The first woman to win the Nobel Prize was Marie Curie, for her contribution in physics in 1903.
The Noble Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded 94 times to 126 Nobel laureates from 1901 to 2013, and 101 individuals with 25 organizations. The international committee of Red Cross and the office of the United Nation High commission for refugees have been awarded the prize three times and two times respectively. Some individuals who have received this prestigious award in recent time include, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Barack H.Obama,Marlti Ahtisaari ,Mohamed Elbaradei,Jimmy Carter and Kofi Annan,Martin Luther King Jr,Nelson Mandela,Desmond Tutu., to mention but a few. Wole Soyinka is the first African to be awarded the Nobel Prize in literature. Are you a Peace builder? ,the Noble Nobel  Peace prize is available for those who have touched our world in a special way, keep seeking for peace in our unpeaceful world and who knows ,one day you will be invited to be a recipient of this prestigious award ,THE NOBLE ,NOBEL PEACE PRIZE.

LIVING PEACEFUL LIFE CHAPTER 2

LIVING A PEACEFUL LIFE
CHAPTER TWO
Peace is not just the absence of war but the total tranquility of the spirit, soul and body. The Hebrew word shalom, which is also translated as peace has multiple meanings which includes, well-being, prosperity, equity, security, good fortune and friendliness. Going by the above definition, a country or state can be war free and at the same time not defined as a peaceful nation. This is because it’s just a matter of time before violence or war will breakout in a country were the citizens are poor, hungry, unemployed and frustrated.
One of the major ways to live a peaceful life is by being “more loving and less controlling”. Ceasing to seek power over people and outcomes in your life is the first major step to living a peaceful life. Trying to control people is about seeking to impose your will and reality on others without ever trying to see things from their own point of view. A controlling approach to relationship will always keep you in conflict with others. Loving others in spite of their faults and differences is the way to a peaceful life. According to the great thinker and peace icon Mahatma Gandhi, power based on love is a thousand times more effective and permanent than power gained through threat of punishment. Learning the skills of negotiation, conflict resolution and assertive communication will help one avoid or effectively go through conflict with others. Loving others involves having confidence in them, that they are capable of living as good a life as possible, all things being equal. In this respect, we should give advice wisely as even giving advice carries controlling tendencies, when it is used as a means to interfere in another person’s life rather than simply offering your own insight in a situation.
When we advice others, we risk assuming that we have a full grasp when in actual fact, we usually do not and we are filtering their problems from our own experience. It is far better to respect the other person’s intelligence and simply be there for them instead of trying to impose your experience as the “answer” for them. Treating others in this way, will respect and not trivialize their view point and this will make our world a more loving and peaceful place for all.

LIVING A PEACEFUL LIFE, CHAPTER 1

LIVING A PEACEFUL LIFE, CHAPTER ONE

Living in peace is about living harmoniously with yourself, others and all of nature. Living in peace is both an outward and inward process. Outwardly, living in peace is a way of life in which we respect and love each other in spite of our cultural, religious and political differences. Inwardly, we all need to search our hearts and mind and also understand the fear that causes the impulse to violence, for in continuing to ignore the rage within, the storm outside will never subside. Some basic attitudes or lifestyles are required for a peaceful co-existence: such as being tolerant, non-violent and holding moderate views. Living in peace is a journey and a way of life that only you can be responsible for.

One of the attitudes that enhance peaceful co-existence is having a moderate conviction: thinking in absolute and holding to convictions without considering the viewpoints and perspective of others is a sure way to live an unpeaceful life.

This type of extremist thinking usually leads to reactive, hasty behavior that lacks the benefit of reflection and deliberative thinking. This pattern of absolute conviction, blocks out other realities in the world and can easily lead you into conflicts when other people fail to agree with your convictions. The wise thing to do is to moderate your convictions by always being ready to question and reflect. Accepting the fact that your beliefs, faith, passion or opinions are but some among many other belief systems in the world will help you live a more peaceful life.

Watch out for chapter two
